The Weighted Blanket

An Essential Nutrient in a Sensory Diet

by

Diane B. Walker, MS, OTR/L

Kathleen McCormack

This new book, co-written and published by an MAOT member is the first of its kind.  It provides complete instructions on how to make and use the popular therapeutic weighted blanket as part of a sensory diet.  Part One describes how to use the blanket.  It gives a brief background on the theory behind sensory integration therapy.  Four different scenarios are used to demonstrate it effectiveness.  Recommended protocols for its use in the clinic, school and home are provided.

Part Two gives complete easy-to-follow instructions on how to make the blanket.  The instructions include the list of materials and tools needed for the project, illustrated fabric layouts, and pre-sewing fabric preparation.   Photographs and graphic designs lead the sewer through step-by-step directions for the construction of this unique blanket design.  Worksheets in the Appendix include a Sensory Checklist, Problem List, an explanation of how the items on the problem checklist relate to the sensory checklist, guidance on goal formulation, and a usage chart to track progress.

"The weighted blanket and the expert advice on its use are highly recommended.  I bought one for my own daughter who has had chronic difficulty getting to sleep.  She has it at college and finds it very helpful.  It has both physical and psychological benefits.  She says it makes her feel "hugged" and that's comforting.
